Tons of Garbage Dumped on Pipeline Road in South Bengaluru: Environmentalist U S Moinuddin says “It Poses Serious Health Risks”

Environmentalist U S Moinuddin highlights the garbage issues across Bengaluru

BENGALURU(MT NEWS): Tons of garbage is dumped on the pipeline road bordering Ilyas Nagar and Umar Bagh Layout in South Bengaluru, the huge pile of garbage adjacent to the Northern compound wall of Jamia Masjid in Ilyas Nagar is creating traffic congestion and health risks to the residents of the area.

Highlighting the issues of garbage dumps on vacant grounds, environmentalist U S Moinuddin said, “Garbage dumps pose serious health risks to humans through air, water and soil contamination. They can contribute to respiratory diseases like bronchitis, asthma and other chronic breathing issues. Garbage dumps are also breeding grounds for insects and rodents causing diseases like malaria, dengue, cholera and typhoid.” Further, he added, “Liquids from waste contaminates ground water and soil with toxic chemicals leading to poisoning and gastrointestinal illness.”

Abdullah Shariff a marketing executive, who regularly passes from the road, said, ” The huge pile of garbage is creating a bottle neck on the road, leading to traffic jams, people are having a tough time moving their cars and two wheelers on the road in such unhygienic conditions, at times the stench from the garbage is unbearable.”

A few days ago, the situation was pathetic, the garbage had not been cleared by the Bengaluru Solid Waste Management Limited (BSWML) from many days, this eventually resulted in a huge pile up of garbage.

Strangely, even if the concerned authorities clear the garbage, a heap of trash appears in a few days, as the residents of the area and the surrounding areas, including the passersby on the road, dump the garbage at the site. Very often, people moving in two wheelers, throw plastic bags full of waste and move from the place.

ROADS AND VACANT SITES ARE NOT GARBAGE DUMPS: Piles of garbage on the road side and on vacant plots is a common problem in many areas of Bengaluru. The residents of the areas should realise that roads and vacant sites are not garbage dumps. Without the cooperation of the residents, long term solutions cannot be found.
